It Must Be Summer!

What do you do when it's hot and humid outside? You do what's fun in the sun in the summer. Campus Life will swim (as long as the thunderstorms stay away) on Wednesday, July 26th and Thursday, August 3rd at the Bluffton Community Pool, 9-10:45 pm. Cost $3
On Thursday, July 27th, enjoy America's favorite past time by going with us to the Toledo Mudhens baseball game. We'll leave at 4:45 pm. from the Campus Life Room. Cost $13.

Then, do you like smores? Join us for high school Campus Life Stratton Pond Party on Wednesday, August 2nd from 7-10 pm. You can swim, fish, canoe, talk, and eat smores around the campfire at the pond. Beat the heat with Campus Life! These are the days my friend!

Team! Team! Team!

I've had the wonderful experience of coaching football at Pandora-Gilboa High School for 16 years. The last 4 years, I've been a volunteer pigskin coach for Bluffton Junior High. In fact, I just finished a coaching session and feel a bit sweaty with all this high humidity and heat. In football, it takes 11 players to do their job to have a successful play. The offensive linemen have to block so that the quarterback can have a good handoff to the running back who has to secure the ball so as not to fumble and then has to run behind the blocks to gain yardage. You can see by this long run on sentence that a lot happens at the snap of the ball. Everybody has a job to do and has to depend on the other players doing what's required of them. Also football is a game of movement. If you don't move, you lose. Thus you do all sorts of drills to help your players to move forwards, backwards, and laterally, all without getting tired!
I see ministry the same way. It takes a group of people willing to do their jobs so that all might benefit. This is the point that the Apostle Paul is teaching in 1 Corinthians 12 - we all have gifts. So use your gifts to benefit the Body. I am so grateful for all the volunteers we have in Bluffton/Pandora YFC. It looks like we'll be adding four more with Brittany, Dustin, Krysten, and Sara. This will mean that we'll have a least 25 adults who will love and care for kids. We're also a living, moving group. Just like you have to move in football to be successful, so you have to move in ministry. You go where kids are at. You call one time and email the next. You find out their needs and morph accordingly. You have to move! So here's looking forward to a new school year with a team geared up to make a difference through Jesus Christ. I can't wait to huddle with the team at The Bluffton Campus Life Room on Sunday, August 27th from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm, which includes a picnic! What football player, I mean, YFC person doesn't like to eat. It's the TEAM! The TEAM!! The TEAM!!!

Paint

My daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Chris (and little Jacob too!) have purchased a home on Albert St. in Bluffton. Once the papers were signed and a key to the house was obtained, some redecoration was in order. Pat and I were assigned and we heartily agreed to paint the downstairs bathroom. So the past two evenings, Pat and I have been painting and pinching each other in the bathroom. For some of the walls you can use the broad sweep of a paint roller. That was my job. Pat on the other hand, was using a paintbrush to get close to the mirror and toilet. Since we were putting a lighter color on a darker color, two coats were necessary.
And I want to know, can any paint only be applied in one coat? I don't think so! Then the most difficult part of the painting took place, and no, it wasn't someone using the bathroom. It was painting the wall where it met the ceiling. At first I tried a tiny paintbrush, the kind you would give a child to paint on a piece of paper. That was frustrating. It only held a drop of paint and it wasn't heavy enough to apply pressure to paint. Then Chris bought a $7 brush that worked perfectly. Soon I was feeling like Michelangelo after painting the Sistine Chapel.
All of this to say that this is how I see Jesus working in my life and in the lives of others.
When we give the keys to our lives to Him, He takes possession and begins for some, total remodeling and in others, redecorating. For some parts of our lives, Jesus can use broad sweeps of a paint roller. Other times He has to painstakingly use a small brush with a lot of effort to create beauty. Either stroke has to be done in a cooperative manner. You have to want Jesus to create His image in your life. It's a description of 2 Corinthians 5:17- "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old (old paint job) has gone, the new (fresh paint) has come!" So let Jesus paint His color into your life.
Also, family and the rest of the Ebenezer group that went to the Philippines return today. More on that experience later.
Plus the weather looks great for a Campus Life Pool Party tonight!! Yeah!!!

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Tonight we'd like to have a Campus Life Pool Party at the Bluffton Community Pool at 9:00 PM.
Unfortunately, it's raining. In fact all the Wednesday Pool Parties so far this summer have had lousy weather. So let's pray it clears up. Thursday night, 9:00 pm. (July 13th) we have a Movie Cafe planned, featuring the British movie "Millions." This is the story of two boys who find a bag filled with money. One wants to give the money away, the other wants to hoard it. The movie will be shown at the Bluffton Campus Life Room and is open to any next next year's 9th grader through 2006 grads. It's free with coffee (Starbucks!) and hot chocolate.
Sunday, July 16th, we head to the Maumee River for a day of tubing, skiing, and cookout. This too is open to next year's 9th graders through 2006 grads. Contact me for details. It supposed to be 90+ degrees on Sunday. A good day to be at the river! Join us after church for a event filled day. In the meantime, it's still sprinkling. Please stop the rain. Let's swim tonight!!!

Pirates of the Caribbean

Pat and I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest when it opened on Friday at a matinee in Toledo. For that showing, there must have been two hundred empty seats. Later we went to the Franklin Park Mall and overheard teens at 7:00 pm. say that all tickets had been sold for Pirates until the 11:00 pm. shows. The movie took in a staggering $132 million in its first three days. The movie surpassed every box office debut in movie history. Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow is hilarious and he makes such a good pirate. How many kids will want to look like Captain Jack Sparrow this Halloween? (should we mention Halloween?) The movie has many twists and turns and is definitely open ended. It'll take a sequel to wrap this one up. The Pirates of the Caribbean was always designed to be a trilogy. So have you seen the movie? What do you think? Anything for deep (Depp) thought or just a fun movie to watch? There's some interesting father - son dialogue and action. Sunday Moments

Today I began a teaching series in adult Bible fellowship at Ebenezer on friends. Friends can be a great source for love or a recipe for disaster. Proverbs 17:17a says, "A friend loves at all times..."

That's the right kind of friend to have. But we also know friends can lead us to the "dark side." So be careful of who you hang with. Friends are like elevators, they'll either take you up, or they'll take you down. I"m reading Joseph Epstein's book, "Friendship, An Expose" this month to see what this good author has to say about friendship.

I also wonder how Sunday went for Mary, Hannah, Wade, and rest of the youth group from Ebenezer that are in the Philippines. It's already Monday there. May the Lord use their talents to advance His Kingdom in the world.

Day 5 at DC 06 Happy Birthday America!

This is our final full day in the nation's capital. DC 06 Conference ended this morning with Lab where we focused on God's Story. It's about connecting our story and our friend's story with Jesus story. The rest of the day was spent sightseeing and preping for tonight's fireworks. A thunderstorm rolled trough DC around 5 pm. forcing everyone off the Mall area. As of now the weather has cleared and all seems to be a go with the fireworks slated to begin around 9:10 pm. Eventully our delegation will work its way back to the Marriott for a night of rest and getting ready to leave tomorrow morning. Our van will leave at 7 am. and the bus at 9 am. It's been a great time at Washington DC. Pray for our trip home tomorrow and for all of us to share Jesus with our friends when we get back. God has stirred our hearts with more devotion and love for Him. These are the days my friend.

DC 06 - Day 4

Wow, what a day. Lab at 9 am. where we focused on our friend's story. For 3Story to be effective you need to intentionally love and listen to your friend. Then we had 2 Big Room experiences during the day. The final Big room focused on Jesus death, burial, and resurrection.
It was powerful and with The David Crowder Band providing worship music you thought you were there witnessing Jesus resurrection. Later in the evening, Paul Miserlain, Cory Huber, Eric Blevins, Stephen Steiner, Adam Wireman, and I went to the Terrace at The Washington Hotel. I had seen this on Rachel Ray's $40 a day program on the Food Network. The Terrace is on the roof of the hotel under an awning, 11 stories up. The view is fabulous. It's a block from the White House and you also see the Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, WW 2 Memorial, and the Lincoln memorial. We had a great time eating ice cream, while Stephen and Adam had burgers. It's great talking to the guys in my small group. They are having a great time and the Lord is meeting them where they are at in their journey with Jesus. Tomorrow we'll celebrate the 230th Independence day. Is this going to be exciting?! It doesn't get any better than being at the nation's capital for the 4th of July. Boom!!

Day 3 at DC 06 - Lab

Today we experienced Lab. Lab is where we meet for 2.5 hours a session and learn 3Story Evangelsim. 3Story is designed by Youth For Christ is geared to help teens (but really anyone, people overseas really love 3Story, especially post Christain Europe) share Jesus with their peers. Today we covered the first story which is "My Story." The two essential elements to "My Story" is to depend on Jeus and be real. Our delegation was put into circle groups with a thousand other teenages. Each teen is assigned a number which tells them which circle group they are in. Each circle group has 8 teens in it. So immediately you learn how to meet new people. Adults meantime, are also placed in circle groups with other adults. Through short teaching segments, use of video clips, and circle group interaction, you begin to process 3Story Evangelism. It really is a fast moving 2.5 hours. Tomorrow, Lab begins at 9 am. and will focus on "Their Story." Pray that the Lord uses what we learn to be better equiped to share Jesus with others. These are the days my friend.

Big Room

Big room was simply awesome! The first 6 chapters of The Gospel of John was presented through music, drama, drawings, rap, and short verbal presentations. It's faced paced and a great way to experience the story of Jesus. The David Crowder Band lead praise music at different intervals during the story of the Christ. This format challenges a person to evaluate Jesus in light of His own words. Pray that all of those present will be moved to love Him more deeply.
After Big room it was off to dinner at various locations. At 9:30 pm. it was back to the convention center for Toby Mac concert. All in all it was a blessed day. Thanks for your prayers. Tomorrow morning we begin Lab. This is where we begin to see how our story intersects with God's story of Jesus and how it is shared with our friend's stories. More tommorrow on Lab.

DC 06 Day 2 - Good Morning!

Since the guys in my room were pretty tired after yesterday, we all went to sleep right away. I woke up refreshed and ready to go! Stephen is up and is about ready to go to the DC Convention Center to help with tech needs. I'm meeting Mark Yoder and Hugh McClintock at 8:30 am in the hotel lobby to register our group for the conference. We'll hopefully be one of the first to sign in our group at the DC Convention Center. Registration begins at 9 am. The first thing you do is make sure your balances are all paid and then you attend a group leader orientation session. After that you get the all important wrist bands which each delegate wears. This identifies them as a delegate and by the color, assigns then to a Lab. The Lab is where we learn 3Story evangelism. After picking up the wristband and notebooks, we'll head back to the hotel and pass them out to the group. After that, most of us will sightsee then we'll attend the first Big Room at 3:30 pm. It looks like a great day is to be had at DC! In the meantime, where's that coffee maker? I sure could use a cup of coffee right now. Make sure you shout a prayer to the Lord for us today.
